In Buddhist scripture, it is said that Kṣitigarbha Bodhisattva was instructed by Shakyamuni Buddha that before Shakyamuni passed away and Maitreya had not yet been born, he vowed to save all sentient beings in the six realms and relieve all suffering, only then aspiring to achieve Buddhahood. According to the sutras, Kṣitigarbha Bodhisattva, in past lives, saved his own mother from suffering in hell several times, and throughout countless eons, he has continually vowed to save all beings in sin and suffering, especially those in hell. Therefore, this Bodhisattva is considered to possess the virtues of ‘great filial piety’ and ‘great vows,’ and is commonly revered as ‘Great Vow Kṣitigarbha Bodhisattva.’
